Developing a Career in Photography

Photography preserves a memory, image, event or story for people to remember for years to come. It is both an art form and a skill that requires a great deal of study to create a successful career. A photography degree gives you the knowledge of the history of photography and the impact that photographs have had on the modern era. You learn how to properly use the equipment and the ways to discern the best angles and lighting for beautiful photographs. Modern digital imagery is a technology that vastly improves the quality of photographs, but traditional photography yields the classical touch that many people crave.

Commercial Photographer

Commercial photographers use the skills learned from their photography degree program to take technically accurate photographs of merchandise, buildings, models and landscapes. The photos they take make use of the technology available in lighting and angles to show the subject from the best perspective.

The photos are used in books, advertising campaigns, proposals, projects, stock photography, etc. There is less of an emphasis on photography as an art in this career.

Scientific Photographer

Scientific photographers often have both a photography degree and an additional degree in a science based field. They use photographs to record scientific data, illustrate scientific information and document procedures.

Their focus is not to make the photos beautiful, but to take a picture from the angle that best illustrates the purpose of the shot. There is no artistic talent required for this photography but it does take a great deal of knowledge and skill.

Photojournalist

Photojournalists document events in their photographs. The photos they take are used to supplement news articles and illustrate a point made within the text.

Depending on the subject, the photograph can be angled to display an attitude or opinion on the subject so it takes a great deal of skill. There is an element of creativity in photojournalism and it is applied when and where necessary.
