The Question of Philosophy

A degree in philosophy prepares you for a number of very different careers. Philosophy teaches skills in concept analysis, communication, critical thinking and decision making skills. These skills prepare you for a career that requires logical thinking, understanding and problem solving. Careers in government, public service, management, criticism, writing, law and religion all make use of these skills. The ability to think on your feet as well as do research is prized in many fields and makes you an excellent candidate for most any occupation.

Attorney

A philosophy degree trains you to think logically and precisely as well as to research and communicate ideas clearly. These skills go far in teaching you to make clear arguments that are well spoken and convincing. Attorneys need to be able to persuade their juries with their concise arguments based on research and rhetorical ability. It is a little known fact that philosophy degree holders have the top scores on the LSAT.

Journalist

The philosophy degree teaches you how to think clearly and question things presented as fact. The news is often biased and hypocritical because of the influences of politics and money. The owner of the news broadcasting company decides what news is worthy of reporting.

Journalists with a background in philosophy know how to argue for their subject matter to be presented and are skilled in presenting that material in a way that is informative and interesting. Their concern is more about the lives of those affected by the events than for those who chose to edit the impact.

Teacher

Teachers are often the most influential people in the lives of students at all levels. They open up the world to the students through books, projects and field trips. Teachers with philosophy degrees show their students the wonders of the world and teach them how to understand the many different people and things that go on in their world. They help enhance our curiosity about the larger world and universe that surrounds us.
