Master’s in Business Administration
Evaluating every aspect of a business enterprise is part of the job description for a manager and executive. The skills needed to successfully do that are gained during the course of an MBA program. Within the discipline there are a number of specializations that can be taken up.
- Human Resource
- Finance and Accounting
- International Business
- Information Technology
- Marketing
- Health and Public Management
- Organizational Leadership
- Risk Management
- Entrepreneurship
Most comprehensive MBA programs take an interdisciplinary approach and give students sound grasp over each of these categories and more. Students can then choose to specialize in areas that interest them according to the type of industry they want to join after graduation.
Where Do They Work?
MBAs have the largest choice in terms of workplaces. Their skills are sought after by almost every industry and work in both the private and public sector, in almost every industry one can think of. All organizations need skilled professionals in business and management so you will find MBAs in industries ranging from pharmaceutical and consumer goods to financial institutions and government departments. The place of work also largely depends on the chosen specialization.
MBAs usually supervise and lead departments such as HR, Supply Chain, Operations, Procurements, and Marketing etc. depending on the specialization that the MBA candidate has. They analyze a company’s business strategy, deal with day to day operational issues, handle the budgeting and planning, and are responsible for the smooth functioning of their team.
Employment Prospects
MBA’s move up the corporate ranks very easily. They are likely to be paid 35% more than people without that qualification. Most employers will not consider candidates for senior management positions without an MBA. The actual salary depends on years of experience, your undergraduate degree, geographical location, industry you are employed in and also the institution you graduated from. Another variant is of course, the sub-field you specialize in.
According to The National Association of Colleges and Employers, in 2006, median MBA salaries were $90,000. The median annual salary of first-year MBA graduates is between $50,000 and $75,000 – with more than 40% earning $75,000 and up. This figure can go up to $115,000 and beyond also. These do not include the perks, medical benefits and large bonuses that MBAs are entitled to.
The growth rate is between 16-22% which shows promise, and even though the degree is expensive, the rewards make it worthwhile.
