Education leaders need to be passionate about education and imparting knowledge to children, but they also need to be business minded and good strategists. Management skills are an absolute must as is the desire to go the extra mile. This can be a rewarding and satisfying career.

Degree Level

These degrees will teach you how to enforce discipline and implement policies that will benefit the entire educational community at your institution and how to strive for educational, not just academic excellence. After completing these programs you can work in schools at all levels, colleges, universities and board branches.

If you have a bachelor’s in a relevant field you can apply for a graduate program which will teach you how to plan a curriculum and supervise the institution. You can pick a specialization of your choice such as higher education or policy implementation, and work your way towards become an effective manager and promoter of a strong academic environment.

A PhD in Educational Leadership is what you will need to qualify for many senior positions such as deans and superintendents. This is a highly complex level that teaches students how to master the art of personnel management, fundraising, budgeting and policy development. A lot of independent study will be required after which students will have to defend their dissertation in front of the committee.

With both these programs you will have to work towards a thesis that explores an area of choice. Internships requirements will need to be met in order to build your resume and gain practical work experience.

You can opt for a distance learning program in educational leadership. Lower tuition costs, no hidden fees, flexibility and ability to work simultaneously are all factors that attract students to online programs.

Educational leaders earn the median income of $86,970 and even though the growth rate is slower than average at ten percent, this is a lucrative and satisfying field to be in.
