Find Affordable Schools Near you

Many people these days are evaluating the option of going for further studies. Especially during these recessionary times, when there’s a lot of job uncertainty, some believe an advanced degree could hedge them against a possible lay off. Others who pursue further studies may be looking into a career change, career advancement, greater knowledge and skills, etc.
However, there are cases where someone may go for an advanced degree without any sound reason for doing so. This is literally setting yourself up for much disappointment later on. Here are the worst reasons for going for a higher degree.
If you are not sure of what you wanted to do, you’ll probably end up taking a degree in something you are equally unsure about. Have you thought of what you’ll do after graduating?
Have you figured out what your interests are and in what field you would like to have a job? If not, it’s probably better to wait till you’ve figured out the answers to all these questions. Take up some temp jobs, do volunteer work in various fields to have a clear vision first.
Is this your life or your mom’s? Doing anything just to please someone else is a surefire recipe for disaster, let alone taking such a major step as further education.
Don’t get us wrong, wanting to please your parents is a great characteristic, but you can’t be living your life in their shoes. Know your own choices and priorities, and go for a higher degree only if you want to do it. Your parents will be happy with whatever keeps you happy.
Getting an advanced degree is a very expensive option, and contrary to what you may be thinking, it’s not a gateway to a greater salary.
It’s true that your career prospects improve and your chances of career advancement also increase, but there is no ironclad rule that says an advanced degree equals more income. There are some degrees that can be very well-paying and there are some best paying online degrees too, but getting a degree just for money’s sake is not a good idea.
Falling prey to peer pressure? What if all your friends were not sure of their decisions either? Just going for advanced degrees because it seems to be the norm in your circle of acquaintances is not a good reason for doing so.
Be clear in your head about your own goals and interests before making a decision as important as this.
Don’t be among those who want to study more for the above reasons. Your career and studies will likely be a major part of your life, and you would want to be in it for the right reasons and not just to please someone or because you weren’t sure about what to do.
