Year after year, thousands of dollars in scholarship money for service members, veterans, and their dependents is left unclaimed, due to many of these myths. Here we have tried to debunk the top 8 myths surrounding military scholarships.

Myth #1: Service Members do not need Scholarships and Grants because they get Armed Forces Educational Benefits

Fact: With the rising cost of college, tuition assistance may not be enough. Sometimes it only covers tuition fee and we all know there are other costs involved with higher education like textbooks, fees, and other items. The many scholarships and grants that are available could help fill in the gaps that military educational benefits do not.

Myth #2: It’s too hard to get Scholarships and Grants

Fact: Yes, it may take some effort however, it is vital to keep in mind that scholarships and grant applications differ extensively and many only necessitate filling out a small form.

Myth #3: Scholarships are excessively hard to locate

Fact: The fact is that countless scholarships just sit there year after year since no one claims them. You just have to know where to start your search. Luckily, there are many websites that can point you in the right direction, just start with one of the popular search engines like Bing or Yahoo.

Myth #4: Scholarships are only for those just out of High School

Fact: You can continue to apply for a number of scholarships even after commencement of university studies.

Myth #5: I cannot apply for a Scholarship if I am overseas

Fact: You are never too far away to apply for a scholarship and some of them can be applied for, years in advance.

Myth #6: Only those with the best of grades get Scholarships

Fact: Yes, students with high grades get scholarships; however, not every scholarship is based on grades and test scores.

Myth #7: You can only get a Scholarship if you play sports

Fact: Only a minute percentage of college assistance is granted due to athletics.

Keep in mind that the number one factor of not getting a scholarship is not applying for one. Begin a hunt for scholarships now.
