There’s nothing like a New Year’s party to boost up your optimism and catapult you into forming New Year’s resolutions. However once the booze starts to wear off, it’s difficult to hang on to the positivity unless you have objective, concrete steps towards your career. Here are five steps you can take to ensure 2012 is your best year yet, career wise.
Have a tete to tete…with yourself
Sometimes we are so focused on just finding a job, starting work and making money that we bounce on the first job vacancy we find. Fast forward a couple of years and many of us find ourselves stuck in a career that doesn’t speak to us. As this year comes to an end, take the time out to reconnect with yourself and find out what exactly is it that makes you feel fulfilled and satisfied. Take the top down rather than the bottom up approach and understand how you can express your creativity and talents to the world. Once you are clear about that, move on to the following tips to convert your passion into a career.
Continue to learn
You either grow or you stagnate, there is no middle ground in this competitive age. Whether it’s an online certification (http://aboutonlinedegrees.org/onlinecertificate.php) or a diploma or an advanced degree like an online master’s, always keep updating your skills and knowledge. If there is one thing that can guarantee 2012 will be better than 2011, its constant and never ending improvement, Tony Robbins style.
Network
This one cannot be emphasized enough as your network can really help you out in the job hunt. You need to mark out a certain amount of time each week for networking purposes. Use social media and networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn and leverage it to your advantage. Join clubs and associations that are related to your field.
Bounce on opportunity
You might be saying this goes directly against number one but it doesn’t. What I meant was that you shouldn’t pick up the first job that falls in your lap till you are clear about. Once you are, scream “Bring it on!” it’s time to pounce on every opportunity, or better yet create one. Get to know all about your field through college brochures, intern, do freelance work, and do contract work or whatever else it takes to get a head start.
Review last year objectively
Hindsight is always 20/20. You need to carve out time to carry out an objective SWOT analysis of last year. Chart your progress, see how many goals you managed to achieve last years, look at the misses, learn from the mistakes and above all thrive on the feedback that you get.
If 2012 is going to be the end of the world as we know it ;p , why not end it on a high note?

Most of the time, a college degree can provide an individual with a decent opportunity at landing a lucrative career. These careers often lead to financial security so a college degree is seen as a good investment.
Online degrees are also seen as affording these same advantages however, not all online degrees are equal. So if you are looking for a return on your investment with your online degree program-these are the 8 online degrees to avoid in 2011.
1. Music Therapy
This degree is purported to give you the ability to help patients using melodies but finding employment with this degree has been difficult for graduates.
2. Latin
Latin is considered a classical language and it has been used to study text from bygone eras. Learning this language is a noble goal however, when looking for a career using it has not made a return on its investment.
3. Philosophy
As above, the study of philosophy will expand your intellectual prowess but an online degree in philosophy will not get a graduate a high paying job.
4. Film
On the face of it finishing an online degree program in film looks like an ideal way to break into the film industry, however statistics point out that the most you will get with it is an internship.
5. English
Unless a graduate is planning to pursue further education an online degree in English by itself will not qualify him or her for much byway of employment.
6. Communications
The problem with an online degree in communication is that the jobs it qualifies one for can be accessed without a degree and many employers will hire the non-degree holder because they can pay them less.
7. Bowling Industry Management
The combination of the declining bowling sports and entertainment industry and the tendency of those without degrees holding these positions contribute to making this a low paying job.
8. Family and Consumer Sciences
This online degree program is a rewording of the home economics courses which used to be offered in many high schools in the nation.
These are 8 online degrees to avoid in 2011. They will probably not provide a solid foundation for employment. That is why it is important for anyone considering an online degree program to investigate what the prospects for the degree will be upon graduation.
