Changing careers is funny thing. It excites you, yet it scares you; it seems challenging, but it is also overwhelming; it seems right and it seems wrong. Yet many people are taking the plunge these days and leaving steady jobs to pursue a career in an entirely different field. With the option of getting an affordable online degree, the path to a new career has become even more achievable.
Whether you decide to go for it or not, a career change will be a major decision in your life. So make sure you do it for the right reasons. If your motivation for a career change is not right, you are surely setting yourself up for much disappointment later in life.
What Are The Right Reasons For A Career Change?
1. To Dig Into Your Interests And Passions
Perhaps you got into a certain field because it seemed like a ‘safe’ option, even though it did not interest you much.
If your passions and interests lie elsewhere from what you are currently doing, making a move to something you actually enjoy is a good idea. After all, you don’t want to be in rut of doing something you don’t even like for life!
2. To Explore Something New And Different
So you feel you’ve done your current profession to death? If that’s the case, and you believe you’ve experienced all the highs and lows of your existing field completely, it’s not such a bad idea to experience something new and different.
Maybe you’ve always wanted to try out nursing; maybe you want to know the ropes of accounting. It’s good to reach out and try something new if you feel you’ve spent enough time in a certain field.
What Are Some Wrong Reasons For A Career Change?
1. To Get More Money
Just getting into completely new waters because a certain someone you know is making a six-figure salary out of it is plain greedy and stupid.
Often, transitioning into a new career requires a lot of hard work, with a measly pay in the initial, entry-level positions. A career change is no shortcut to a fatter paycheck. If that’s the reason you are changing careers, you might as well stick with your current field.
2. To Get Away From The Boss And Colleagues
Everyone comes across a difficult boss at least once through their professional lives. The number of people who are happy with their superiors can be counted on finger tips.
Many hate to be with their colleagues and feel they’ve been the most unfortunate as far as the team they work with are concerned. But there are other ways of addressing these issues and a career change is the furthest from being a solution to such problems!
So if you are decided on making the big move, make sure you do it for the right reasons. Do it for the wrong reasons and you are sure to remain unhappy and unfulfilled.

What number one and two above – good reasons to change careers or jobs – have in common is that they are about leaving behind your comfort zone and expanding who you are. That being said, if you run into a really terrible boss or your office situation becomes poison, sometimes escape is a good reason to switch.
