Future Career as a Dental Assistant

Dental assistants work under the direct supervision of dentists providing chair-side assistance. Dental assistants provide a wide range of tasks within the dental office; however, the jobs that a dental assistant is able to perform in a dental office are regulated by the State. Any advanced job functions will require a license or certification.

Job Functions of Dental Assistants

Some of the variation in job duties dental assistants perform in a dental office may include the following:

• Assisting dentists with tools and supplies
• Assisting dentists in preparing materials and instruments
• Assisting dentists with suction devices
• Making and applying temporary crowns
• Taking blood pressure and pulse
• Providing instructions to patients on oral care and oral hygiene
• Sterilize equipments
• Clean and disinfect instruments
• Taking impressions of patient’s teeth
• keeping patients’ mouth clean and dry while the dentist works
• Update and maintain patients’ records

Dental Assistant Training and Licensing

There is no specific training requirement to start off as an entry-level dental assistant. However, most dental assistants will get some formal training from vocational or technical schools or from accredited dental assisting programs, which takes anywhere from four months to one year to complete. Upon completion of the program, a certificate or diploma is awarded. Some states will require licensure or registration showing that the dental assistant has successfully passed a written and/or practical exam. Quite a few dental assistants also receive their training and develop their skills on-the-job. An associate’s degree from a two-year community college is also available and is always highly preferred. It is always best to stay up-to-date with new technology and dental procedures to stay competitive in the field. Job prospects and advancement opportunities are better for those with formal education.

Dental Assistant Salary and Job Outlook

Dental assistants make a little over $30,000 per year. However, salary and benefits will vary depending on experience, demographics, level of education, and the company you work for. Employment opportunities are expected to grow at about average. Future job outlook looks great for new dental assistants entering this field.
