With the advent of technology, computers are extensively being used in all areas, especially in education. This has led to the popularity of online courses among students, especially students who want to pursue higher education. Though traditional campus based colleges have been around for many years now, the recent popularity of online colleges has started a debate on which is a better option.

Online Colleges versus Campus Based Colleges

College degrees offered either through distance learning or through campus based colleges help students gain knowledge and skills required to develop a successful career. Choosing a specific format of education depends on the needs and requirements of students. Both options have their pros and cons.

In terms of accessibility, online degree programs can be pursued from anywhere and at anytime irrespective of the location or time. There are no geographical boundaries and you can choose any of the top online courses. The biggest benefit of online degrees is their flexibility as you can study as well as pursue your job without discontinuing your existing career. Moreover, online degrees that are accredited are accepted by both academicians as well as employers and are acknowledged as being similar to degrees offered through campus colleges.

You need to be wary of fake online degree programs offered through `diploma mills’. These might claim to offer online courses at a much faster rate but they offer fraud degrees which will not be valued by employers. You should do adequate research on the online university offering these online degrees. You should ensure that they are accredited and offer federal student aid which proves their authenticity.

However there are some degrees that are best pursued through on-campus colleges as they require extensive hands-on experience. An example is engineering which needs practical as well as hands-on training and is difficult to access through distance learning. Campus degrees are also more structured and organized. This is easy to do in campus colleges as they are brick-mortar and will have proper infrastructure.

What Costs More? Online Colleges or Campus Colleges

One of the most important differentiating factors is the cost. With the increase in tuition costs due to recession, college tuition has soared tremendously. Because of this reason more people are showing an interest in online college degrees which are comparatively less expensive. Moreover they are also very cost effective as you can save a huge amount of money on travel costs, books and stationery, and housing while you pursue the online courses from the comfort of your home.

Though you can save huge amounts of money through online degree programs, you need to make have a personal computer and an uninterrupted internet connection to pursue the course online.

Before you commit to either one program, take a look at your needs and requirements, your learning style and preferences, then discuss with friends, family and peers before you make your final decision. Goodluck!

If you are interested in pursuing an online degree in specific area but are worried about your existing commitments and do not want to discontinue your current job, you need to learn to balance both. You can easily balance your job, family obligations and higher education by planning a little and being focused. Online degree programs help you to use technology and be more flexible in terms of pursuing higher education even while juggling a job.

Suggestions for balancing your new job and an Online Degree

Pace yourself as it is not very easy to accelerate your online degree and plan according to the time and energy you have to spend every week. You can start off with just a few classes and develop a plan to include studying in your hectic schedule.

Be organized and plan accordingly. You should follow a calendar for the class requirements, assignments and deadlines based on the syllabus provided by your online school.

Rearrange your schedule as you need to devote the same amount of time to pursue an online degree as a traditional class. Try to spend at least 10-15 hours weekly for each class and compromise on your leisure activities.

Avoid procrastinate: Though you are allowed to work at your own pace and schedule, you should not delay your submissions and should stick to the deadlines.

As you can study from anywhere and at anytime, you need to plan and restructure your workspace. You can even check with your employer on whether you can study during your free time in the office as well.

Though you are pursuing an online degree program at either a graduate or post-graduate level, it does not mean that your classes are anyway easier than the traditional classes. All the assignments will be of college level so you need to be more focused and put in extra effort.

You should stay focused and complete the course as early as possible by having weekly review session. You should have a positive attitude towards your course to make it more effective.

You can set your own goals and create milestones for the topics you are pursuing. You should strictly follow your course calendar and the detailed schedule of all assignment deadlines and test dates.

You should have access to technology and understand the technical aspects of online learning as most of your mode of communication will be through technology only. You should advanced technology at home to pursue your course with good backup and internet service.

You can manage your online degree program well if you focus on your schedule and avoid last minute stress. You should be proficient in balancing between your family time and job as well as higher education effectively.

You should communicate effectively with your family and friends so that they can assist you with the online degree program. You can discuss with them your course and project details so that they can support you and give you valuable inputs and guidance.

Therefore, to balance your new job and an online degree program, the most important aspect is that you need to be self disciplined as these courses come with a lot of flexibility. You need to be committed and self-discipline to avoid defaulting.

Hanging out takes a whole new dimension with Google Plus while retaining its punch and good vibes. All online students still sitting on the fence trying to decide whether they should ditch Facebook yet or not, should read on to discover more about Google’s mojo: Hangouts on Google Plus!

How is Google Hangout so Unique?

So if you’re still living in 2011 and don’t know what Hangouts are, Google Plus has come up with this awesome utility that allows up to 10 people to video conference with each other at a time. Did I just hear a yawn? It’s not just any other video conferencing tool but as someone puts it, “it combines your workspace with other workspaces”. Now that Google Plus is integrated with Gmail, anyone with a Gmail account can access Google Plus. All you have to do, once you log on to Google Plus (through your Gmail account) is to click on the bottom of your stream and invite your friends (as well as others) to join you. To make use of extra features, click on Hangouts with Extras.

Special Features offered by Google Hangouts

Hangout with Extras is loaded with goodies that make online collaboration fun and easy. It has built in notepad as the default ‘whiteboard’. Other features include file sharing, which allows users to share files, and screen sharing which lets them share a part of or the whole screen with someone else. Google Plus is integrated with Google docs and SketchUp and lets participants see, work on and edit documents, drawings, surveys and spread sheets in real time. That is, it provides multichannel interaction. Now a person sitting in Alabama can collaborate, view and edit documents in real time with a person in California, which is exciting news for online tutors as well as online students.

What is there in Google Hangouts for Online Students?

I do not exaggerate when I say that Hangouts is to online learning what the computer was to education in general. A recent study conducted of online students by Swanson (2011) shows that online students want “more collaboration, regular feedback that uses multimedia and tools to aid metacognition.” Unbelievably Hangouts provides a solution to all of these needs. It allows greater collaboration and regular feedback between students and teachers, and the collaboration between peers can aid in metacognition as well. Since Hangouts is still in its initial stage, users are still figuring out and experimenting to find novel uses but people have already started conducting online classes, planning online group study sessions, doing research collaboration and providing remote tech support!

If you are ready to take your online learning experience to an entirely new level, start Hanging out on Google Plus, you won’t regret it, I promise!
