The cost of online college courses can be less or about the same as traditional courses than many may expect. In some instances the total tuition you will pay for an online degree will exactly be the same as what you would pay at an on-campus site. The major difference is you will save a more money because you will be taking classes online rather than on-campus, so you do not have to worry about traveling expenses, room and board or other expenses related to attending a traditional college or university.

How Much Will Your College or University Course Cost?

Costs will vary depending on your academic program and number of credit hours. There are no regulations as to how much universities or colleges can charge in tuition fees for most part-time courses. Your main costs however, as an online student will be tuition and fees. Take the time to do some research on how much the same course cost at various online institutions. Keep in mind that you can get financial assistance to help cover the cost of your college education.

Average Per-Credit Tuition for an Online College or University

The cost for each course can usually be found in a college brochure or website. However, the average cost per credit hour at various online colleges on the lower end is between $200 and $300 and anywhere from $600 – $900 at other institutions. However, many factors can impact the cost of a complete online degree program including:

  • Books and supplies
  • Class materials
  • Type of program
  • Credit hours
  • Graduate and undergraduate
  • Where you study

The Basic Costs for Online Students:

Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees may vary based on your academic program and number of credit hours. In some cases tuition is not the same for all full-time students, you may have to calculate your own tuition based on the charge per credit hour.

Books and Supplies
This expense covers all of your online course materials; a rough estimate based on a four-year college in 2009-10 is approximately $1,122.

Personal Expenses
The costs for things like cell phone bill, home telephone and internet bills fall under personal expenses. Keep careful track of these especially a cell phone bill, as it can quickly build up.

Benefits as an Online Student: Elimination of Accommodation and Travel Expenses

Luckily for you, as an online student you save a lot of money by not having to pay for room and board and traveling expenses in addition to other costs associated with attending a traditional school.
